Don’t ask Nirvana to help you run for 2013 Homecoming Queen

UPDATE: Sub Pop aka ‘Nirvana’ has responded with a video at the bottom of the post as promised

A Virginia Tech homecoming candidate (and mascot) wrote to Sub Pop to ask if Nirvana would be willing to record a video message in support of her campaign. She appears to not realize that Nirvana hasn’t been Nirvana since Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994. Sub Pop wrote on their tumblr:

Earlier today in the Sub Pop mailbag, we received an enthusiastic message from a college student running for homecoming queen. She asked for a video affirming support from our one time recording artists, Nirvana, in order to aid her campaign in becoming homecoming queen. We dressed up and obliged.

Video forthcoming with the script: “What’s up Virginia Tech? This is Nirvana! Just wanted to wish you guys a Happy Homecoming Week and good luck at the game this Saturday. LET’S GO HOAGIES!” Or something like that.

Here’s the video Sub Pop sent her:

… there is one possible plausible explanation that would involve the student not being a completely ignorant idiot. Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl performed with Paul McCartney and if I’m not mistaken, I believe they used the name Nirvana. So maybe the young ‘un thought THAT was Nirvana?? I just want to give the kid the benefit of the doubt. As someone who spent the better part of the 90s very much into Nirvana, I am somewhat appalled at the lack of awareness “kids today” have for great music, basically anything that someone who was alive and breathing in the 90s would consider rock (from the 60s through the 90s). But then I think about what I could have turned out like if we had iPods growing up and if our parents let us run everything, like controlling what was on the radio in the car they were driving us in like kids today are allowed to do. I probably would have missed out on the greatest music ever made and would have turned out to be an ignorant little twit as well. So I try not to judge TOO harshly.
