Who was the first major artist to release an Internet-only single?
David Bowie, who else? This week in 1996 David Bowie released his single Telling Lies back when most people were using dial-up modems to get their internet. This was the first time a major artist put out a downloadable single online. Along with the release he did this:
Bowie launched the single with an online chat session, where he and two other people pretending to be him answered questions from the audience (Bowie told the truth; the other two “told lies”). The chat audience was asked to vote on which chat personality was the “real” Bowie; the “real” Bowie came in 3rd
