Whatever happened to music genres?

Remember the days when you could tell someone you liked ‘alternative’ music and they would know that you probably liked The Smashing Pumpkins? Those days are long gone. Today when someone asks what kind of music you like, you need to start naming bands to give them an idea (or lie and say you only listen to The Velvet Underground).
