See the postcard that inspired the most famous Neutral Milk Hotel album cover

In 1997 designer Chris Bilheimer made the album cover for Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea based on the above postcard from the early 1900’s. According to Kim Cooper’s book Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (33 1/3), Bryan Poole said that Jeff Magnum “was always into that old-timey, magic, semi-circus, turn-of-the-century, penny arcade kind of imagery.” See much more after the jump!


Here is the back of the postcard (image via cardcow). This postcard is dated 1908, and has “postcard” written in many languages, most prominently German. Here is the resulting album cover and some more cards from this era:
