That time 8-year-old Anthony Kiedis proposed to Debbie Harry

Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis grew up in a different world than most of us. His dad Blackie Dammett (pictured with Anthony above) was a struggling actor and part time drug dealer in Los Angeles. In a 2008 documentary Blackie said:

“My dad beat the hell out of me. I couldn’t do anything, go anywhere, or say anything. When I was a kid, before I ever grew up I was determined that I would never treat him like my dad treated me. So basically I let him do anything he wanted. He was always exposed to debauchery, drugs, beautiful women, all of the stuff I really liked.”

Young Anthony was very bold according to Blondie guitarist Chris Stein:

“I knew Blackie from the scene,” Stein recalled. “He showed up at the Tropicana one day and said, ‘This is my kid.’ Anthony proposed to Debbie.

Debbie Harry herself was asked about the proposal a few years ago:

‘I did have one (proposal) from Anthony [Keidis] from the Red Hot Chili Peppers when he was about 8! I treasure that.

‘I had to let him down gently.’

Anthony must have eventually gotten over his young rejection as he starred with Debbie in a rare Paul Morrissey film called Changing Fashion in 1993 which you can watch below:
